Our latest release, Abstract Intelligence, picks up SOTD, FWA and Developer Award

A light commentary on the state of AI
2024

We’re thrilled to announce that our latest experimental release, Abstract Intelligence, has picked up a Site of the Day and Developer Award from Awwwards and an FWA.

The project is a playful and reflective exploration of artificial intelligence — not from a technical or corporate angle, but through the lens of culture, art, and human curiosity. From early attempts at machine learning to today’s creative tools and ethical debates, Abstract Intelligence is a scroll-based digital story about the strange and fascinating ways AI is shaping our world.

Built as a self-initiated experiment, the site gave our creative and technical teams space to explore new techniques and storytelling formats. It features a 3D sculptural hero with drifting clouds, built using WebGL, and a series of lightweight interactive elements that guide the narrative.

We wanted it to feel rich and immersive, but still fast and responsive — even on less powerful devices.

To maintain smooth performance — especially on mobile — we had to rethink how complex visual elements were rendered. Instead of loading thousands of cloud objects individually, our developers devised a way to group them together, drastically reducing the load on browsers without sacrificing visual detail.

Our lead front-end developer, Rob Sim, said:

“We wanted it to feel rich and immersive, but still fast and responsive — even on less powerful devices. So we created custom cloud effects that use far fewer system resources, while still looking beautiful and dynamic.”

This project was a chance to play, question, and create — and we’re incredibly proud to see it recognised by our peers in the industry. Go explore it for yourself at abstract-intelligence.com.
