DPD is the UK’s leading parcel delivery company, and is well known for its reliability and fantastic customer service, which includes Predict, a software service that notifies customers of their one-hour delivery slot via SMS.
With over 2 million parcels delivered per day, the cost of running this SMS service was significant, and so we were approached to help design a new, user-friendly mobile app that would allow DPD to send customers push notifications instead.
User research, user testing, UX, UI, IOS Android & Wearable Development
The key to the project was the onboarding – holding the users’ hand and helping them through the sign-up and verification process as quickly as possible.
Firstly, we introduced users to the key features of the app through a series of coach screens, succinctly explaining why we need to know their location and get their permission to send notifications to their device.
Before users can take advantage of all the app’s features, they must first create an account and verify their device. This is done through either an SMS or email notification followed by a step-by-step sign-up form.
Once in the app, users can personalise their experience by choosing their preferred delivery preferences, including the ability to redirect “in-flight” parcels to their neighbour, nominated safe place or local pick-up store.
Alongside the core app design, we also created a series of views for Apple Watch and other smartwatch devices.
Designing and developing for the newly launched Apple Watch we concentrated on micro interactions and animations. The focus was on subtle and swift indications, visually, haptically and aurally.
In addition to the Apple Watch, we also designed the wearable app for the Samsung Gear and other Android devices.
Response to the app has been phenomenal, with over 1 million downloads and an average app store rating of ⅘. At the time of writing, the app is trending at No4 in the lifestyle section of the Apple app store.
